Lago di Occhito
Molise
The Occhito reservoir on the Fortore river straddles the Molise-Puglia border and is the largest artificial lake in southern Italy (6,000 ha). Though man-made, decades of low human use have made it a major wetland: greater flamingos stop in March-April, ospreys hunt the open water, and marsh harriers breed in the reedbeds. The lake's western shore in Molise has a dirt track suitable for dogs and hiking.
