Lago di Nemi
Lazio
Lake Nemi fills a perfect volcanic crater in the Castelli Romani hills south of Rome. In antiquity it was Diana's sacred lake; Caligula had two enormous floating barges here — recovered from the lake bed in the 1920s and destroyed in WWII. Today the crater lake is ringed by woodland and famous for its strawberries.
