The dam at Pontechianale backs the Varaita into a long lake at 1,600 m, the hamlets of Castello and Chianale on its banks and the pale pyramid of Monviso filling the head of the valley. A flat path and the quiet road make an easy circuit, with larch wood and pasture all around.
