Canterno formed when its swallow-hole blocked in 1821; a dam later stabilised it. The reserve around it protects oak wood, reed and marsh with a flat 6 km shoreline path, hides and grazing land, backed by the Monti Ernici and the spa town of Fiuggi nearby.
