Lago di Baratz
Sardinia
Formed when dunes sealed off an ancient river valley from the sea, this is the only natural lake of any size on the island, its shallow water ringed by Mediterranean maquis and umbrella pine plantations. A short walk connects the lake to the dune-backed beach of Porto Ferro on the coast beyond. Otters, once thought locally extinct, have been confirmed present again in recent surveys of the lake's margins.
