This deep crater lake in the Alban Hills sits directly below Castel Gandolfo, long used as the papal summer residence, whose gardens overlook the water from the crater rim. Ancient Romans built an unusual drainage tunnel from the lake around the 4th century BC, still partially intact, to manage its water level during the siege of Veii. Chestnut forest covers much of the steep crater walls, and rowing clubs use the calm water for training.
