Lago del Matese (1,007 m) on the Matese plateau in the Campanian Apennines is the largest mountain lake in southern Italy — a natural lake on a karst plateau with golden eagle and Italian wolf. The plateau has ski slopes in winter. Black stork breeds here — one of the southernmost nesting sites in Italy. The lake freezes in cold winters. Dogs welcome on the shore path.
