Lago d'Averno, Campi Flegrei

Campania

Lago d'Averno near Pozzuoli was the Roman 'entrance to the Underworld' — Virgil set the entrance to Hades here in the Aeneid. The lake sits in a volcanic crater of the Campi Flegrei supervolcano. The circuit path (4 km, flat) passes ruins of a Roman spa complex and the Temple of Apollo. The lake is now quiet with ducks and grebes. Dogs welcome on the circuit path.
