On the quieter western side of the Mont Blanc massif, Lago di Combal collects the grey, sediment-laden meltwater flowing off the debris-covered Miage glacier, one of the largest of its kind in the Alps. The lake's colour and outline shift year to year as the glacier's moraine dams and reshapes it. A gentle path along the valley floor gives close-up views of the glacier's ice-and-rubble snout without technical climbing.
