Lago di Barrea
Abruzzo
Formed by damming the Sangro river in the 1950s, this lake now looks entirely at home among the park's wooded hills, with the medieval villages of Barrea and Civitella Alfedena perched above its banks. A flat path follows much of the perimeter, popular with families and cyclists, and ospreys are occasionally seen fishing here.
