Laghi di Lesina e Varano, Gargano
Puglia
The Laghi di Lesina and Varano on the Gargano coast are the two largest coastal lagoons in Italy — separated from the Adriatic by narrow sand bars. Greater flamingo is present year-round in Varano. Little tern and black-winged stilt nest on the sand bars. Eel fishing has been practised here since Greek times. The Gargano above the lagoons has Europe's finest beech forest at sea level.
