From the Menouve or Champillon alp roads above Étroubles a path climbs pasture and larch to Lac de Champillon, a still lake reflecting Mont Vélan and, over the ridge, the tip of the Grand Combin. Marmots are everywhere and the Grande St Bernard hospice is not far over the hill.
