Vulcano — Fossa Crater
Sicily
The Gran Cratere of Vulcano last erupted in 1888–90 and is still vigorously fumarolic. The crater rim at 391 m offers a view over the entire Aeolian archipelago — Lipari, Stromboli (smoking), Filicudi and Alicudi on clear days. The fumarolic vents on the rim glow orange and yellow, releasing sulphurous steam continuously.
