Piscine Naturali, Ponza
Lazio
Ponza is a crescent-shaped volcanic island 70 km from the Lazio coast. The Piscine Naturali are sea pools carved by the waves into the volcanic tuff — enclosed by rock ledges that calm the waves. The island was used by Roman emperors for exile; Caligula banished his mother Agrippina here. Roman fish ponds (piscinae) are still visible on the north coast.
