Furthest from the Sicilian mainland of the Egadi group, Marettimo has no roads beyond the small harbour village, and its interior of limestone peaks and Mediterranean scrub remains largely uninhabited. Trails climb past ruined Roman-era buildings and a Norman-Saracen castle to viewpoints over the string of sea caves that ring the coastline. Peregrine and Eleonora's falcons both nest on the island's cliffs, drawn by its isolation and lack of development.
