According to tradition, St. Francis of Assisi spent a Lenten retreat here in solitude, and a small chapel still marks the spot. The island's fishing village later became known for a distinctive style of needle lace, still demonstrated by a few local artisans. Car-free lanes wind past stone houses to a low summit with views across the whole of Lake Trasimeno.
