Riserva Naturale Isola della Cona
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Where the Isonzo meets the Adriatic, this reserve of lagoons, reedbeds and grazed wetland supports huge numbers of migratory birds, from flocks of wintering ducks and geese to breeding avocets and herons in spring. A small population of Camargue-type horses and Highland cattle graze the marsh to keep the habitat open, and hides along the trails let visitors watch without disturbing the birds.
