Sant'Onofrio al Morrone is built into the rock face of Monte Morrone above the Sulmona valley, the retreat where Pietro da Morrone lived as a hermit before his election as Pope Celestine V in 1294. A steep path climbs through scrub to the hermitage, with the Sulmona valley opening up below.
