Above the tourist gorge, the Alcantara steps down through a nature reserve in a series of "gurne" — deep round pools scoured in the black lava, linked by little cascades and fringed with willow and oleander. A path from Francavilla di Sicilia follows the river between them, far quieter than the gorge itself.
