Grotte di Pastena

Lazio

Discovered and opened to the public in the early 20th century, this cave system carries an underground stream through a sequence of large chambers hung with stalactites, with the final stretch sometimes covered by a short boat crossing when water levels allow. The cave sits within the Monti Ausoni, a limestone range riddled with karst features similar to the better-known Frasassi caves further north. A ruined medieval castle overlooks the village above.
