Balcone di Frasassi, Marche
Marche
The Gola di Frasassi above the famous caves is a 150 m deep limestone gorge where the Sentino river has carved through the Apennines. The Romanesque monastery of San Vittore alle Chiuse (11th century) sits at the gorge entrance — built directly into the cliff. Peregrine and alpine swift nest on the limestone walls. The gorge path above the caves gives a completely different view of the same geological system.
