Grotta Zinzulusa, Castro
Puglia
The Grotta Zinzulusa at Castro on the Salento coast is entered by boat from the sea — a cave at sea level with a tidal salt lake inside (the Cocito). The cave has stalactites called 'zinzuli' (rags in local dialect). The underground lake has endemic blind crustaceans found nowhere else on Earth (Salentinella gracillima). The name comes from the stalactites hanging like rags. No dogs inside.
