The entrance chamber of this cave, near the Ogliastra hill town of Ulassai, ranks among the largest in Europe, tall enough that light and outside vegetation reach some distance into the opening. A lit walkway continues into further chambers filled with columns and stalactite formations built up over hundreds of thousands of years. The artist Maria Lai, born in Ulassai, drew on the surrounding limestone landscape for much of her later work, and the town now hosts an open-air museum in her honour.
