Grotta di Su Mannau
Sardinia
This cave near Fluminimaggiore extends for many kilometres, though only the first stretch is open on the guided tour, passing through chambers with an underground stream and pools that occasionally flood after heavy rain. Traces of ancient mining activity, likely Roman-era exploitation of the surrounding lead and zinc deposits, have been found near the entrance passages. The wooded valley outside carries the ruins of more recent industrial mining that shaped this part of Sardinia's economy for over a century.
