Monte Carso, Trieste Karst
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
The Carso (Karst) plateau above Trieste is the type locality for all karst geology — the word 'karst' comes from this place (Kras in Slovenian). The plateau is pockmarked with limestone dolines and sinkholes. In May, military orchids (Orchis militaris) bloom on the plateau. The cliff edge above the bay of Trieste gives an extraordinary view — the city, the Adriatic and Slovenia simultaneously.
