The Grotta di Sant'Angelo above Mula in the Savuto valley is a Byzantine cave church with 11th-century frescoes still intact — carved directly into the limestone cliff. The approach is a path through old olive groves above the Savuto river gorge. The cave was used continuously from the Byzantine period through the Norman era. One of the most atmospheric religious sites in Calabria.
