The Grotta-Santuario di Calomini near Rifreddo in the Basilicata Apennines is a 17th-century hermitage church built inside a natural limestone overhang above the Serrapotamo gorge — the church facade is flush with the cliff face. The overhang roof drips and the interior is damp from seepage. A miraculous image of the Madonna is inside. The gorge below has dipper and otter. Dogs on leash near the sanctuary.
