Sorgenti del Timavo, Duino

The Timavo river sinks underground at Škocjan (Slovenia) and re-emerges at San Giovanni di Duino after 40 km underground — one of the longest underground river systems in Europe. The Romans considered the emergence sacred and built a temple here. The coastal park around the resurgence has an ancient plane tree grove; whooper swans regularly winter in the calm water. The castle of Duino is visible on the coastal cliff above.
