The Grotta del Romito in the Savuto valley near Papasidero has a life-size engraving of an aurochs (wild ox) on the cave wall — dated to 12,000 years ago. It is one of the finest Palaeolithic cave engravings in Italy. The cave is in a gorge of the Lao river. Access is by guided visit only. The Lao river canyon above is one of the wildest gorges in Calabria with peregrine and black kite.
