Grotta del Genovese
Sicily
Reachable on foot across Levanzo's rugged interior or by small boat along the coast, this cave preserves engravings of horses, deer and fish dating back over ten thousand years, alongside later Neolithic paintings of human figures. The site was rediscovered only in the 1950s and remains accessible solely with a guide to protect the fragile artwork. The approach trail crosses dry Mediterranean scrub with views across to Marettimo and the open sea.
