Grotta del Cavallone
Abruzzo
Made famous when D'Annunzio used it as the setting for his tragedy La Figlia di Iorio, this cavern opens halfway up a sheer rock face above the Aventino valley. The approach alone, a zigzagging path cut into the cliff, is worth the trip, and the chambers inside hold huge stalactite curtains and calcite pools.
