The Grotte di Castelcivita near Paestum in the Alburni mountains are the longest cave in Campania — 4,800 m of passages formed by the underground Calore river. The cave was inhabited from Palaeolithic times; Bronze Age and ancient Greek finds were made inside. The formations include helictites (curved speleothems that grow against gravity).
