Grotta del Bue Marino

Named for the 'sea ox' — the Mediterranean monk seal that bred in its chambers until the mid-twentieth century — this extensive cave system stretches deep into the limestone cliffs of the Golfo di Orosei, reachable by boat from Cala Gonone. Guided walkways lead past chambers hung with stalactites and an underground lake, with prehistoric artefacts found in the outer chambers pointing to Nuragic-era use. Monk seals are now considered locally extinct here, though the cave remains a symbol of the species' former range.
