Grotta di Borgio Verezzi
Liguria
Unlike most of Liguria's ancient show caves, the karst system beneath Borgio Verezzi was only exposed in 1933 when a quarry explosion accidentally broke into it, and organized tours began just a few decades later. Delicate stalactite and stalagmite formations still relatively free of centuries of foot traffic line the accessible galleries, kept at a constant cool temperature year-round. The clifftop village above, with its outdoor summer theatre festival, makes a good pairing with the cave visit.
