Gravina di Matera Canyon Walk
Basilicata
The Gravina di Matera is the 200 m deep limestone ravine that explains the Sassi — the cave city of Matera grew in the walls and above the rim of this gorge. The canyon walk follows the Gravina river between travertine cascades and Byzantine rock churches carved into both walls. The view up to the Sassi from the canyon floor is the most dramatic in southern Italy.
