Campo Imperatore, Gran Sasso

Campo Imperatore is a vast upland plateau at 1,800 m beneath the Gran Sasso massif (2,912 m, the highest peak in the Apennines south of the Alps). The plain hosts an astronomical observatory, wild horses and a ski resort. Mussolini was imprisoned in the hotel here in 1943 before his rescue by German gliders.
