Gran San Bernardo Pass

The Great St Bernard Pass (2,469 m) has been a major alpine crossing since the Bronze Age. Napoleon crossed it with 40,000 men in 1800 — in May, in driving snow. The hospice at the top has been run by Augustinian monks since 1050; they bred Saint Bernard rescue dogs here for centuries. The dogs are still there.
