The Hospice du Grand-Saint-Bernard has operated continuously at 2,469 m since 1049 AD — a millennium of shelter for travellers. The famous Saint Bernard rescue dogs are still kept here. Napoleon crossed in 1800 with 40,000 soldiers. The pass lake sometimes has ice until late July. A small museum covers the hospice history and the famous dog breed that takes its name from this pass.
