Rifugio Vittorio Sella, Gran Paradiso

Rifugio Vittorio Sella (2,584 m) at the head of Valnontey is the base for Gran Paradiso ascents but is also visited for its exceptional ibex density — herds of 50–80 animals graze above the refuge in late summer, completely undisturbed. Gran Paradiso National Park (est. 1922) was created specifically to protect these ibex from extinction. The refuge was built in 1898.
