Gole di San Venanzio

Abruzzo

The Gole di San Venanzio near Raiano are where the Aterno river has cut 150 m through solid limestone, leaving sheer walls barely 3 m apart in places. The gorge trail is equipped with iron steps and handrails and takes 1.5 hours to walk through. Above the gorge, the hermitage chapel of San Venanzio (8th century) is carved directly into the rock face. Golden and Bonelli's eagles nest on the upper walls.
