Gole di Popoli, Gran Sasso
Abruzzo
The Gole di Popoli cut through the Gran Sasso foothills above Popoli — a limestone canyon where the Aterno river pushes through the mountain. The gorge was on the ancient pilgrim route from Rome to the Adriatic coast. Peregrine and golden eagle nest on the canyon walls. The Roman bridge on the Sulmona plain below is 1st century AD. Dogs off-leash in the gorge.
