The Gole del Sauro near Pisticci cuts through clay badlands and sandstone in the eastern Basilicata lowlands — a river canyon carved through the calanchi landscape. Otter on the Sauro river. Peregrine nests on the sandstone walls. The calanchi above are cream and ochre. The Pisticci sassi above the canyon are the most impressive cave dwellings in Basilicata after Matera. Dogs off-leash.
