Gole del Raganello, Pollino
Calabria
The Raganello gorge cuts 400 m deep through limestone above Civita on the Calabria-Basilicata border — the deepest canyon in the Apennines. The route requires wading the river at multiple points and is only passable in summer low-water. The walls narrow to 2 m in the so-called 'Piano di Ruggio' section. The gorge is Albanesi-Arbereshe territory — Civita above speaks a medieval Albanian dialect preserved for 500 years.
