The Alcantara river cuts through a basalt gorge formed by Etna lava flows, creating extraordinary columnar basalt formations and natural pools. Visitors wade upstream through cold clear water between walls of hexagonal basalt columns 25 m high. One of Sicily's most unusual natural experiences.
