Gola del Furlo

The Gola del Furlo is where the Via Flaminia (220 BC) was cut through vertical limestone walls by Roman engineers — the tunnel bored by Emperor Vespasian in 77 AD still carries the road today. The Candigliano river runs turquoise below the cliffs; golden eagles nest on the upper walls. The gorge narrows to 10 m in places. A dedicated nature reserve protects the cliff fauna.
