Trauttmansdorff's gardens climb the hillside above Merano in themed terraces — Mediterranean, woodland, sun gardens, water features — distinct from the Passeggiata Tappeiner and the Cascate di Merano covered elsewhere in this guide, both lower down in the valley. Empress Elisabeth of Austria ("Sisi") wintered at the castle in the 1870s, and it now also houses a museum of Tyrolean tourism history.
