Foresta Umbra — Querce Monumentali
Puglia
The inner core of Foresta Umbra on the Gargano is one of the few examples of old-growth broadleaf forest in southern Italy — Turkey oaks and beeches with girths exceeding 4 m, some over 500 years old. The forest holds roe deer, fallow deer and a small population of Ural owl at the southern limit of its range. The trails in the forest interior beyond the car parks see very few visitors.
