Fosso della Mola, Cerveteri

Lazio

The vie cave near Cerveteri are sunken roads carved 10 m deep into tufa rock by the Etruscans — engineering of extraordinary scale. The Fosso della Mola section runs for 1.5 km through mossy tufa walls with ferns, hart's tongue and maidenhair in the cracks. The Etruscan necropolis of Cerveteri (UNESCO) is 5 km away. The sunken road is cool even in August and completely quiet.
