The Bottaccione ravine carries a medieval aqueduct and an old road up between sheer cliffs. In its rock face runs the thin clay band, rich in iridium, that Walter and Luis Alvarez studied in the 1970s as evidence of the asteroid impact 66 million years ago — marked by a plaque. Peregrines nest on the walls.
