Fortezza — Franzensfeste

Built by the Austrian Empire in the 1830s to guard the approach to the Brenner Pass, Franzensfeste is one of the largest fortresses in Europe, its grey stone walls and bastions still dominating the narrow valley below. Paths circle the extensive grounds, with the reservoir lake it now overlooks adding a further modern layer to the site.
